Stage 3 - High potential and gifted education program

Program

This program focuses on the Intellectual Domain. The program is designed to develop skills in the use of a topographic map, compass and Global Positioning System (GPS). The program will also explore environmental issues and develop problem solving and teamwork skills. Students use their orienteering and mapping skills to locate and solve a series of puzzling treasures throughout the day.

Activities

Students will:

  • develop navigation skills by learning how to use a compass to find bearings, determine direction, and follow short orienteering courses to build practical field navigation skills
  • apply mapping skills, plotting coordinates with eastings and northings to locate features accurately
  • integrate GPS technology with compass use, learning to interpret bearings and follow waypoints
  • work collaboratively in a treasure hunt challenge, combining GPS and compass navigation with problem-solving and literacy skills to interpret clues, collect puzzle pieces, and complete a team-based quest.
2026 program dates

This program will run across multiple dates in Terms 2 and 3, 2026. Applications for participation will be sent to schools at the end of Term 1.

Vehicle access

Address: 59 Whitmore Road, Maraylya

Minibuses and visitors arriving by private car can enter the gates on Whitmore Road and drive part way down the drive to the signposted 'Visitor parking' area near the mud brick shed. It is a short 100m walk from the visitor parking area to the classroom and office area. We kindly ask that visitors do not drive beyond this point in order to ensure the safety of our students.

Student numbers This program is delivered with a maximum of 12 students per day (4 students from 3 schools).
Visiting teachers Teachers are welcome to accompany students, however this is not mandatory. Parents are welcome.
Adverse weather On days where the weather is unsuitable, a Longneck Lagoon EEC staff member will contact the organising teacher to discuss alternative arrangements.
Medical notifications Notify Longneck Lagoon EEC by completing and returning the student welfare form at least one week before the excursion. This form will be sent out upon confirmation of booking.
